The whole block visible here is Seattle Center, which was the site of the 1964 World’s Fair. The complex WSW of the Needle is the Pacific Science Center. Just west and north of the Needle you can see some of the pavillions and carnival rides. Right in the middle of the pavillions is the western terminal of the Seattle Center Monorail (in service since the Worlds Fair). The “red and purple blob” now also holds the Science Fiction Museum. The stadium to the north is Memorial Stadium. The circle to the west of the stadium is the huge International Fountain, and to the west of that is the Key Arena, one of Seattles main venues.

Keith: One correction: The Seattle World’s Fair was held in 1962. It might be worth mentioning that Key Arena is the home court for the Seattle Super Sonics. The Seattle Center complex also contains the city’s opera house, the newly refurbished McCaw Hall; also, the Center is the home of Seattle Repertory Theatre and Intiman Theatre as well. Pacific Science Center adjacent to the Needle is a regional destination for science exhibits. The Center as a whole comprises a large portion of Seattle’s cultural venues.
The color of the Space Needle’s top dates the image. As pointed out, it was built in ‘62 for the World’s Fair. In 2002 the top was repainted its original orange color for its 40th anniversary. It’s now white again.
