French Frigate Shoals

Thursday, 28th April 2005 by James

Updated

To the West of Hawaii there’s the French Frigate Shoals, which look a lot like a Giant Pacific Alien Dolphin Thing. The dolphin shape is actually a number of small islands, one of which has been enlarged to create an airstrip.

A Dolphin?

Thanks: mathematizer & danny

Almost looks like the eye is a submarine or something.. but I’m betting it’s some tiny island.

I wonder if we’re seeing a coral atoll here peaking just below the surface of the Pacific. Whatever the explanation, this dolphin god seems to be playfully sticking his tongue out at the satellites. That seems appropriate. Can a mammal the size of Niihau still be considered cute?

So long, thanks for the fish…

    Amelia Erhart?

The “Eye” of the “Dolphin” is French Frigate Shoals. Read more on the Google.

  6. 6. Tim says:

Nah, Brian’s right. It’s the dolphins’ final attempt at communication before leaving the planet.

Hey! I submitted this a week ago!!! mathematizer… watch your back.

  8. 8. Jay says:

Is taking these guys over a week to post submissions? And I thought all my submissions weren’t worthy, but maybe they just haven’t caught up yet.

  9. 9. Alex says:

Sorry Corey, but this submission has been in the DB for nearly a month… We actually have submissions from the first day we were online that we **still** haven’t posted yet! We currently have over 2200 submissions in the DB, so not everything gets posted straight away. However, we really do fully appreciate everyone’s submissions (and we try to credit you all if we can), and although not everything will get posted (we have standards after all) if it’s something cool then we **will** put it on. Eventually ;-)

    One and the same.

Talking of sea creatures, a little further North you find this swordfish hanging out off Alaska.

well duh, it is part of Googles plan to take over the world. The dolphin shaped island is really Googles secret international HQ where they plot to take over the world.

Mauna Kea from above is pretty cool.
