The San Jacinto Monument
A monument to the battle that won Texas’ independence, the San Jacinto Monument is the world’s tallest memorial column. At 570 feet, it’s 15 feet higher than the Washington Memorial. Also at the site is the permanently berthed Battleship Texas.
Many thanks to David, Charo Boyett, jamesIII, Paupe, and notmrjohn.

The column itself is actually a little shorter than the WAshington Monument. When the Texas government (post-statehood) asked the United States for permission, the US government approved, with the limitation that the column had to be shorter than the Washington monument. It’s the museum that the Texans built under it that makes it taller.
