Built in 1965 and once home to the Houston Astros and the Houston Oilers, the Reliant Astrodome is now part of Reliant Park and sits next to the new Reliant Stadium (to the left, still under construction in this photo), the Reliant Arena (that triangular thing below the Astrodome), and the Reliant Center (North of the Astrodome). The Astrodome is also famous for Astroturf, the artificial grass first used in the stadium and now found almost everywhere.

What’s that theme park looking thingy just to the south?

  2. Andrew says:

That would be Six Flags Astroworld.

Six Flags Astroworld almost deserves a topic of its own. It’s got some good roller coasters (although in the old satellite photo GoogleMap has, the park still has the horrible Taz Texas Tornado). It’s a shame that the park is getting closed down this year!

I had to go to the Astrodome this weekend to volunteer… the Reliant buildings are where they’re housing some of the survivors from Louisiana.

If you look closely at Astroworld, you will see that they are in the process of tearing the park down. Coasters are being dismantled and the water park is dry… probably the last shot ever taken of this theme park.
