Response to DDA : The geese may not be migrating - more than likely they are on their way to their next feeding site.

Great shot though! Any more flocks seen anywhere else? Or any other large group of animals?

Response to Izzy : Here is the proof that flying high make a difference.

http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=37.587705,-120.900453&spn=0.008529,0.012081&t=k&hl=en

Those pictures are take from a plane.

About the birds, why are they going to the west ? If you are in autumn, they're supposed to go on the south, and if it's springtime, they're supposed to go to the north... Am I wrong ?

I don't see why flying so high would make a difference if the photos were from satellites. Mountaineers routinely see them flying over the Himalayas at 28,000 feet (about 5 miles), but even the lowest Earth-orbiting satellites are about 125 miles out. At that distance, the difference between the ground and 5 miles is negligible. Any satellite that could pick them up at 28,000 feet could also do so at 28 feet. It seems more likely that these photos were taken from some sort of airplane.

Jeff,

Just checked out the website - it looks good. I remember you - I used to crew on Ed Williams boat, until he moved - you raced with us a few times if I remember correctly. Hope all is well at the club, its a part of my life I miss without Ed's boat there for easy sailing (all I have is a small catamaran).
