Steve Rot sent us this cool link to somewhere that looks very like Mars (although it’s actually in North Wyoming), thanks Steve!

How neat. That looks like an entire countryside made out of red clay! If you scroll farther South there exists a lot of what appears to be coal (or another black substance). There are even two large circles that look to be solid black. What are these things?
On second thought, it could just be incredibly dense forest. I still think that the entire countryside of red clay is a neat idea, though.
If you zoom in, you’ll see them really clearly. The circles are fields.
Talk about hitting close to home. Thats is the flank of Sheep Mountain just north of the towns of Greybull and Basin, Wyoming, where I grew up.
Sheep Mountain (and most of the surrounding area) is a treasure trove for fossils. We used to take field trips there every year, and always find something interesting. To the east of Greybull there have been a number of important finds, including dinosaur tracks and several new species.
I wonder how difficult it would be for Google to make a “Google Maps Satellite” for other planets we have high-resolution imagery for.
I know we have massive, detailed satellite maps of Mars and the Moon, and rader topography for Venus for most areas.
Even if it was something horribly hackish (copy the Maps Satellite code into a different folder, and instead of Earth maps, maps from the other planets.)
I’d also like to see Google’s coverage expanded to cover the entire planet. They have the satellite up there — imagine how much interesting Google sightseeing we could do in, say, Iraq, or somewhere else worthwhile.
JWK, I totally agree. Here at GS we’re all extremely exited about the possibility of satellite maps for the whole of the world – or even the whole of America would do at the moment!
We hadn’t even thought of other planets though!
I grew up with National Geographic magazine and sci-fi; I love the Earth, and I live Mars as well. It’d be great to live in Wyoming.
I actually found that weird area when I was looking for an airplane graveyard that I saw while driving back to Michigan from Seattle in 1997. If you look to the southwest of the area, there’s an airfield. To the west of the airfield is a bunch of airplanes in the grass. Here is a ground shot
Is there any explanation for the redness of this area? There is an abrupt change in terrain right here View Placemark / Google Earth

Google Mars is live now http://www.google.com/mars
I wonder which planet will be next to have a map?
