Another post that got lost in the server upgrade

The Las Vegas motor Speedway complex consists of a 1.5-mile super-speedway, 2.5 mile road course, 1/2-mile dirt oval, drag strip, go-kart track and a racing school. And even better, its got a giant ‘Las Vegas’ written in the middle!

The Oklahoma City National Memorial honours the victims, survivors, rescuers, and all who were changed by the Oklahoma City Bombing of April 19, 1995. It stands on the site of the Alfred P. Murrah building and is the largest memorial of its kind in the U.S.A.

At the top of the thumbnail you can see the rectangular reflecting pool with the “gates of time” at either end. In the southern half is the “Rescuers’ Orchard”, a grove of fruit and flowering trees that surround the “Survivor Tree”, an elm that survived the bombing.

Jeff says:

This is located over a marsh in South Louisiana. This is the area where I sail, and I was scouting out possible anchorages when I saw these birds.

Someone apparently said in the comments that yes, this definitely is a flock of birds – geese in fact, picked up because they fly so high. So cool, thanks Jeff!

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is home to the Indianapolis 500, Brickyard 400, and U.S. Grand Prix. To the east of the course are fourteen holes of Brickyard Crossing golf course, while the other four are found inside the race track. Apparently it used to be nine holes inside the track, but several of them were removed when a road course was built inside the oval in preparation for the U.S. Grand Prix, which has been run at IMS since 2000.

Crazy Horse Memorial

A few miles from Mount Rushmore is the Crazy Horse Memorial which Korczak Ziolkowski started carving singlehandedly in 1948 and it’s not expected to be finished any time soon.

Although the satellite photo is not the best shot you can almost make out Crazy Horse’s 87 foot head in the piece of rock just south of the red-roofed building (it may help to compare to this photo) and his arm extending to the south-east. If you scroll to the south west you’ll find the visitors centre who have more information on the project at crazyhorse.org.
