Ostankino Tower

Saturday, 25th June 2005 by James

The best shadow yet is that of Ostankino TV Tower in Moscow, it’s absolutely huge.

On completion in 1967 it was the tallest free-standing structure in the world; however, the CN Tower in Toronto overtook it in the 1970’s. In 2000 the “Moscow Beauty” as it is known caught fire and during the repair work the pinnacle was raised about 122 feet in order to reclaim the title of world’s tallest free standing structure. I can’t believe they cared that much!

but yeah, imagine if yer car was parked under that shadow. weird walking out of a building and having that shadow all pwn yer car. that would be weird to walk in and out of that shadow.

    Yeah, nice shadow..
By the way, the pinnacle was raised only on paper imho…

    Luke, what’d you mean?

If you look a little further north and north east, there are two jets, but there isn’t a runway around

  5. 5. Mike says:

Yeah, and this is “Buran” ;)…

Here is a picture frm the ground: http://www.geocities.com/PicketFence/5192/ostankino.html

it is 1105 feet (337 metres) tall, incase you were wondering, like I was.

  8. 8. wr says:

Nope. 337 meters is the height at which the observation deck and restaurant “Seventh Heaven” are located. Total height was 540 meters (1772 ft) before the fire (august, 2000) and reconstruction (2003). Total height after 2003 is 577.44 metres (1894 ft) and it’s really higher than CN Tower (1,815.39 ft). Currently Ostankino Tower is the tallest free-standing structure on land in the world. Probably Burj Tower in Dubai (http://www.som.com//resources/projects/4/9/5/printPreview.html) will be higher when they build it.

To elaborate on the jets, they are part of VDNH - a soviet exhibition centre built to show the world the strength of the soviet state ( pics: http://www.stokely.org/2004-russia-end/ ). Ironically enough, with the fall of communism, the park now lays decrepit and used for electronics markets and trade shows.

I visited it while travelling last year - it’s a really fascinating place. The planes that you can see here ( Placemark: Google Maps / Google Earth ) are examples of Aeroflot planes. but by far more interesting than those are what’s in the centre of the circle - a version of the Vostok launcher that Yuri Gagarin used on his first space flight. I found a photo (not mine) at the bottom of this page: http://www.oshea.dk/moscow.htm

That’s so cool. I lived in one of those apartment blocks just down from the tower on Akademika Korolova for 5 years. That tower was my view out of my 16th. floor window - and I remember when it was on fire too! I would stroll out the back and into VDNKh park for shashlik and beer in summer. Winters were great too. Moscow is a great city. I’m going back there soon. If you pan right you’ll see the shadow of the rocket monument that honours the cosmonauts, and further up is the Soviet “Jack and Jill” statue made from stainless steel - it’s huge!

About the VDNH center - the name was changed to Exhibition Center and it is mostly shopping however the fountains are fantastic and it has two large amusement parks more flowers that you can believe. It is really a beautiful place and in summer there may be 20,000 people there on nice days.
