Please note that some or all of the objects mentioned in this post are no longer visible on Google Earth or Google Maps.

The Channel Tunnel (or “Chunnel” as it’s often called) is a 23-mile underwater crossing of the English Channel. The trains go underground here, with the train loading terminal just to the west. There’s also a large horse etched into the hill alongside.

The French side of the tunnel at Calais is not in high-resolution but you can still make out the trainlines.

The thumbnail shot is of one of the boring machines used to dig the tunnel, apparently there’s a big “FOR SALE, ONE CAREFUL OWNER” sign alongside it.

This software does even compute topography!

The machine doesn’t look that boring.

xXx: What’s with the ad for google earth? I’m sure we’re all well aware of it.

I rather think the horse is more of a sight than the chunnel, but that’s just me. :P

    HaHaHa…
    Not boring…Boring as in drilling

  5. Russ says:

if you have a look on the ‘hybrid’ view it shows a line going from the tunnel to the French side. très intéressant!

I just recollected for a second my ferry travel to france when I read this blog. Infact the ferry sailing to France was unforgettable, the services, vessels, facilities, sailing…really delightful on board experience of Norfolkline ferries.

Anyone know where i can find a cheap ferry?
Preferably one with a delightful onboard experience?

  8. I’ve had to lock comments on this post due to repeated spamming from the cowboys at Norfolkline. I would strongly advise anyone considering their ferry services to try elsewhere.
