Oktoberfest, Munich

Despite the title, the annual “Oktoberfest” takes place each September in Theresienwiese, Munich. You can see the large tents being constructed where Germans and tourists will sit at enormous long tables and drink beer by the litre. If things haven’t changed much from when I was there in the late ’90s then there will also be large group renditions of Alice (Who the f**k is Alice) at every opportunity.

Oh, that song. Oh, how it makes me think of bier and bier and bier…

When I was in Germany in 1996, it was one of the songs on the juke box in the bar. The Germans played that song over and over–as well as Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise.” Germans, apparently, love Coolio.

  2. Elise says:

Actually Oktoberfest is a celebration of wine, not beer. But drink it by the litre they do.

  3. Mayweather says:

Actually, Oktoberfest is not a celebration of wine but a celebration of the royal marriage that took place in 1810 (the king-to-be Ludwig I. married Princess Therese). In 2003 6.1 million litres of beer were drunk and wine is not drunk by the litre, exceptions may occur.

A very nice picture of Oktoberfest 2004 in progress can be found here.

The “Alice”-song may still be very popular (I have not been there since 2002) but it depends on the current (and so-called) “summer hit”.

  4. I think German drunkards have settled on “Hey Baby” (as in: “Heeeeeey, heeey Baby … uh, ah… I wanna know…”) as their song of choice for some time now.

/never been to the Oktoberfest, though

  5. BionicBeatBoy says:

“Hey Baby for sure in 2000
The Ludwig story is correct too

OMG I was drunk for a month…so many photos…so little memory of it all!!

  6. RWTH Aachen (Germany) says:

Oktoberfest is only about beer and party nowadays…

  7. Nadia Lea says:

Well I live in Australia and I think that Oktoberfest is a aneversity for The King to be Ludwig when he married Princess Therese.
And I think it is stupid to get so p***ed in that time of year.

    Further comments.
There are roughly 14 tents, where you can have your beer, food and dance.

The larger 10 tents are able to seat 6000 to 9000 people each, and each tent has a beergarden outside, where another 2500 in averagre can be seated. So, it’s huuuuge.

Oktoberfest is about: tolerance, people from all over the world, fun, dance and … beer of course).

the city of waterloo in canada has crazy oktoberfest parties. The town has such a big german influence- the city even used to be called berlin. apparently its the biggest oktoberfest celebration outside of munich, but there may be others. for a city of 90 000, we have almost an 80% turnout to the oktoberfest celebrations. we’ve even got a parade! oktoberfest is something that the people of waterloo are really proud of…………not that they remember what happens during it
