Crazy! Just last night I was reading a book called Sons of the Conquerors: The Rise of the Turkic World and the author was talking briefly about that motto. Ataturk, the father of the modern Republic of Turkey, launched a massive campaign of secularization/westernization after Turkey ended up a big loser after World War I. The Ottoman/Muslim's motto was "Thank God I am a Muslim." Ataturk changed this slogan to a more nationalistic, secular motto: "How happy is he who can say â€˜I am a Turkâ€™". Trivia for the day.
