Just last night I was reading a book called <em>Sons of the Conquerors: The Rise of the Turkic World</em> and the author was talking briefly about that motto. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ataturk" rel="nofollow">Ataturk</a>, the father of the modern Republic of Turkey, launched a massive campaign of secularization/westernization after Turkey ended up a big loser after World War I. The Ottoman/Muslim's motto was "Thank God I am a Muslim." Ataturk changed this slogan to a more nationalistic, secular motto: "How happy is he who can say ‘I am a Turk’". Trivia for the day. Crazy!
