Remember the Afghan Royal Palace? Well David Quin from Melbourne had seen it from ground level and took photos! He writes:

I was in Kabul in September 2003 working with the UN, writing the software for the voter’s registration system used during 2004. Whilst there had a good look around the palace. It had indeed been a magnificent building – but has (as the aerial photo shows) been extensively damaged and looted.

It is in quite a state:

Check out the UXO (UneXploded Ordnance) warnings and the shell half-buried in the ground in the third photo.

Thanks David!

The white blob in our thumbnail is a parasail, with the speedboat doing circles just to the East. This is just off the coast of Mexico where we can see the Rui Palace hotel (again, under construction in the satellite photo) where submitter “DJ Swammi” is going on honeymoon next month.

The Port of Barcelona is covered in Large type, there’s El Consorci, Honda, Frimercat and a couple more which I can’t quite read. Perhaps Google Earth users will have more luck :D

The Gherkin & Tower 42, London

30 St Mary Axe aka ‘The Gherkin’ was opened on the 28 April, 2004, yet is still under construction in the satellite photo (I’ve been saying that a lot recently). Wikipedia goes into detail of all the clever designs incorporated into the 180m tall building and has a few ground level photos.

Just down the road is Tower 42 which, at 183m, is the tallest building in the City of London. It was formerly know as the NatWest tower (when it housed the bank’s head office) and was designed to resemble the NatWest logo when viewed from above.
