Well a year later and lots of clarification the Temple in Chorley is now in hi res.

And very nice it looks aswell.

To attempt to clarify a bit more. The Community of Christ is probably not anywhere near better-funded than the main LDS church. It’s just that this is looking at their world headquarters. If you look at downtown SLC, you’ll see that if there were a real-estate religious smackdown, the SLC LDS would win hands down. Not that the value of real estate matters in a religion…

And as far as Chorley goes. I doubt most Mormons in the US would know of it. But since it is in an area where the first LDS missionaries worked in England, it probably is kind of a spiritual home to British LDS folks. I’m a seventh generation Mormon, raised in Utah, and have only heard of Chorley because some of my ancestors lived there, and joined the church there in the late 1830s.

If you go there you will find some kmz files with most of the Latter-Day Saint temples marked. I know some of the recently built have not been updated so all there is to see is bare ground.

Those temples are very special and sacred. They aren’t like the Community of Christ’s spiral domed building.

To clearify, the spiral temple isn’t the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. It is owned by the Community of Christ.

I didn’t read all the comments here, but the statement that the independence was the site of the Garden of Eden is incorrect. The location is called Adam-ondi-Ahman and is located maybe 40 minutes north east of KC.

also had a good laugh at the “obviously better funded sect” part, and even that they were refered to as “sects” of the church… That’d be similar to calling any Methodist a sect of the Roman Catholic church…

I was curious and stopped here on a road trip across the country. I found the sprial obnoxious and thought it looked out of place in this nice little area (inside wasn’t much better).

I think northern git is referring to what Mormons call the Preston England Temple.

It’s significant because of Mormon success in making converts there in the 1830s and -40s, and because current LDS president Gordon Hinckley served as a missionary there before WW2.

Sorry jimbo - didnt mean to be disrespectful - just dont know much about your religion sorry. Chorley has the biggest Mormon Temple outside Utah and i’m surprised you havent heard of it. i was way wrong with my assumption sorry - it turns out Chorley is very important to Mormons but only because it was where they first settled when they came to England (and not the other way round - i think i was thinking of Quakers)
