Look to the south and you'll see it's bordered by the St. Francis Dam, which is shored up by a massive wall of soil, on which trees are growing. The reason for that is that the dam broke in 1928, causing a catastrophic flood that washed away acres of houses and trees and pretty much the whole area. To make sure it would never happen again they put that mound of dirt in front of the dam. As it turns out, the dam was actually built in an ancient fault line, but they couldn't have known that when it was built.
