I took a keen interest in the Caerphilly castle during my brief stay at a billet north of town during WWII. I got to know a few local residents during the three month period. On one occasion myself and another US solder encountered a ghost while walking from Pontypridd to Caerphilly late at night. The encounter was on a small mountain. I am searching for anyone with information concerning sightings in this area. A local woman I met during my stay, was quite familiar with similar sightings in the area at the time. Is this still common local lore? Do you know of anyone that may have information about this?

Coincedentally the best Subway in wales is opposite Cardiff castle (linked above). Must be something about castles that make sandwiches great!

There's definitly two in Wales. Wait, I have something lying around my house with this info, hold on...

I'm back.

First, a Gwynedd railway staton invented ""Lianfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch" (58 letters) as its name as a hoax. It means "St. Mary's Church in the hollow of the white hazel near the rapid whirlpool of the church of St. Tysilo near the Red Cave".

Then, the Fairbourne Steam Railway, also in Gwynedd, came up with this 67-letter beauty in order to outdo its competitor: "Gorsafawddachaidraigddanheddogleddollonpenrhynareurdraethceredigion"
It means "The Mawddach station and its dragon teeth at the Northen Penhyrn Road on the golden beach of Cardigan Bay".

As of the beginning of 2004, they were, repectively, the 4th and 3rd longest place names in the world.

I think some of the longest transit stop names are (subway stations) Shitennojimae-Yuhigaoka (22 letters, or 23 using new romanization) or Nishinakajima-Minamigata (23 Letter) or Tsururumi-Riyokuchi Koen (23 Letters), Oosaka-Dome-Mae-Chiyozaki(22 Letters) (...or the granddaddy of them all (a Bus stop): Tenjimbashisuji Yonchome-Kita-Kuyakusho-Mae (39 Letters!!!! (note: this bus-stop actually moved and they changed the name to something quite a bit shorter))... This same city (Osaka) also has "Noe" (3 letters) and Yao (3 Letters)

Nice- I love the detail you can see on these castles, this one and the one uncle wilco just posted. And Rich- doesn't a certain stop at that subway have one of the longest place names in existance?
