World’s (second) Largest Football?

Frank over at the Google Earth Blog pointed us to a Giant Football (Soccer Ball for you yanks) in Dortmund, which will be hosting some of the 2006 FIFA World Football semi-finals next month.

He suggested it’s the world’s largest football, but at about 50ft in diameter I’d say it’s about the half the size of the Japanese example we posted last month. There seems to be a ramp leading into the ball, can any locals tell us what’s inside?

Thanks: Frank

Tada! I have found the answer! It’s a sculpture, I think, made by André Heller. I may be wrong, but I think it’s portable, and is doing, or has done, a tour of Germany.

I remember seeing that ball in berlin few months ago. During dawn it had some fancy lighting on it. I didn’t visit the inside but i think the exhibition was about football ;)

The football is a part of the culture program for the world championship in june in Germany. Inside the WM-Globus there is a 360° screen for projectons, virtual installations and interactive games all around football. The globe is on a tour through all championship cities.

I read in our newspaper that the football is a coverd-up rollercoaster in a theme park.
