The largest movable one is in Green Bank, WV. On Google maps it shows up as a fuzzy blob, but if you know the layout of the place you can find all the major landmarks.

Whoops, forgot the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope, in West Virgina. At 110x100 meters, it's the largest stearable in the world. http://www.gb.nrao.edu/GBT/GBT.shtml

I want to remind people it's not a competition. If it was, the VLA scope in Socorro NM with 1.6X the area of the german scope would have to be brought up. And the ability of the VLA to be configured as a 22 mile across scope.

Hey, I've been there. This thing is HUGE...We were kicked out of a presentation once though because someone was disturbing it...but hey, I was 5 years old.
As for the other competition: Go Germany! ..and since soccer should not be political: go Iran! :-)

Effelsberg is the largest moveable radio telescope in the world, the one in Puerto Rico is the largest non-moveable radio telescope.

If you have ever the chance of visiting the one in Effelsberg, you should really take the chance. It's mounted in a small dell and you can't see it until you are more or less directly in front of it. So you'll get the dimension to see very lately. Watch how long it takes for a bird to fly through it.

With a little luck it will move while you are looking at it, takes some time to gather, as it moves pretty slow. ;-)

Arecibo is much larger, but Effelsberg is fully movable while Arecibo is just built into the ground. Iirc Effelsberg is the second largest in the world of its kind and indeed it looks pretty impressive.

I think it's nice that nobody pointed out how this telescope is only 9.3 times smaller in terms of area than the one in Arecebo, Puerto Rico. That would have been rude.

Yup, Germany wins. So much for Costa Rica.

As a semi-soccer fan in America, I have to say: USA! USA! USA! But we're up against the Czech Republic first match, dammit. It was a good try.
