This is Normans Cay in the Bahamas, and lying submerged just under the surface of the water is a genuine 1980s drug smugglers plane! Here’s a bonus underwater photo of the wreck taken by a guy who snorkled around it.

Ship Wreck

Normans Cay served as the headquarters for Carlos Lehder and George Jung’s drug-smuggling operation from 1978 to around 1982, and this Curtiss C-46 Commando was used as part of their operations.

And you thought drinking and driving was bad…

George Jung is better known as Boston George. He’s the subject of that great movie, Blow.

I actually spent a weekend on Norman’s Key in the 90s (in the octagonal house on the East side of the island at the second dock). In addition to the plane in the water, there is also a boat on the highest point on the island, about 1 km up the road from airport, southwest of a juction with the road running to the Eastern beach. Apparently, this was the boat of the harbourmaster who had a disagreement with Lehder. Lehder, having a crane on the island, put the harbourmaster’s boat where it remains today.
