Please note that some or all of the objects mentioned in this post are no longer visible on Google Earth or Google Maps.

Here at Yarm School Teesside, England, the pupils are performing better than most in the schools league tables. They’ve also impressively managed to get themselves featured on GSS, by drawing a picture on the roof of one of their school’s buildings…

Congratulations kids, you’ve very likely created the only visible penis on Google Earth.

Update: Reader Evan found this awesome (and much larger and therefore better) penis drawn on the surface of a frozen pond in Connecticut!

Thanks to Matt and Evan.

The World’s Largest Airport

Continuing this week’s semi-theme of very large things, we present the world’s largest airport near Dammam, Saudi Arabia!

Although it’s nowhere near what I’d expect from such a grand title. Compare its tiny, empty terminal to the bustling Heathrow airport and you’d be forgiven for thinking I was making it all up.

You see, King Fahd International is the world’s largest airport by area, and at 780 km² it is bigger than the nearby country of Bahrain. There’s 698,585 people in Bahrain and they’ve still got three airports!

Wikipedia for King Fahd.

Is that a mountainous Trimaxion Drone Ship1 hovering above Buckinghamshire, England? Sadly not – this is actually the Milton Keynes Xscape, one of three leisure centres in the UK which contain, well – mountains.

Xscapes are centered around a real-snow indoor ski slope, and this particular one is also designed to look like a snow-covered hill. It’s also the location of a 16 screen cinema, shops, a climbing wall, bowling lanes, bars, a fitness center, and somewhere round here’s there’s also an indoor skydiving centre! Very, very cool.

1) Whaddya mean you’ve never heard of a Trimaxion Drone Ship? Sheesh! It’s the spaceship from The Flight of the Navigator!

Large Buildings

The Palace of the Parliament in Romania has a floor area of 350,000 m² which makes it one of the world’s largest buildings. Previously called the “House of the People” under communism it also narrowly misses the top spot of “largest government building in the world” behind The Pentagon.

It has taken the top spot in one category though – it’s the world’s heaviest building! Hang on, how on earth do you measure the world’s heaviest building?

South Korea’s Lotte World is not hard to spot, and is officially the world’s largest indoor theme park. So big in fact that a large part of it is outdoors on Magic Island to the South.
