Please note that some or all of the objects mentioned in this post are no longer visible on Google Earth or Google Maps.

Written on a old pier, just off Manhattan island, are these two pieces of, um, “word art”.

The left hand piece seems to say “SUCK D**K” while the other item looks like the rather confusing “F**K ME SAFE”. What on earth does that mean?

Thanks: Felippo

Probably it means that someone doesn’t want to get pregnant. ;-)

  2. rob says:

love the censorship, followed by the blatant showing of it in the word. :D

  3. Malcolm says:

This could be the US governments new policy on safe sex, getting the message across to youths through satellite imagery over google maps.

  4. Evan says:

I guess it means use a condom.

Despite the apparent regression into teenage boys that you guys seem to have taken with big willys, swear words, massive sperm etc etc (not that i’m complaining mind – being the self appointed chief childish post supplier and all) but its obvious that you arent ‘down with the kids’ and understand their lingo. Round our way (which i might add is not Manhattan) the word ’safe’ sort of means ‘ok’ or ‘that would be jolly good old bean’. As i understand it (ie not at all) the expression ‘Fuck me safe’ roughly translates as “I think it would be jolly good if you would have sex with me”. Either that or i think you can file this alongside the whole ‘EMA’ and “LONSDALE’ thing a few posts back where we concluded that people who who write big rudes words on the ground are generally not English Professors but are usually illiterate numbskulls.

  6. Keith T. says:

The US government’s policy on safe sex is not to have sex.

  7. Nick says:

It may not be clever, but I think you’ll find it is big…

  8. Jason McKim says:

I’m actually going to cast my vote for the ambiguous phrase being:

    FCK MY sht

I don’t usually like censoring words, but I’ll go with the flow.

    I think it says

F*** YOU and someones name with letter S

I’m also wondering how our intrepid ‘artists’ got on to the pier. Using the nearby lorry as a gauge that is quite a gap between the piers with no visible link. It seems too far to jump and to get a boat just to write some rude words seems a bit over the top. So many questions……….

What on earth is going on here?!?!?!?

Not the cool looking aircraft carrier but the ghost pier. Should we get Scooby Doo and the gang involved? I seem to remember the aircraft carrier being discussed before but was the Case of The Spooky Pier cleared up? Was it the caretaker all along, dressed up to scare people away from hidden treasure?

  12. James says:

The aircraft carrier is the USS Intrepid, one of our very first sights. I dragged my wife there whilst in New York last year, purely because I’d seen in on Google Maps and thought it looked like a cool place to visit.

As for the Scooby-pier, it certainly wasn’t there when I visited.

Ahh People who do graffiti in the states tend to like to do it on challenging places. usually places that are more visible like bridges over interstates but still..

  14. ajho says:

Are you sure it doesn’t say F*CK MY SAFE and isn’t that a representation of a combination lock top left, and as for SUCK LOCK well the mind boggles.

  15. RodneyG says:

11 and #12, the ghost pier is quite visible on TerraServer, so much so that it’s not a ghost at all. I can’t be sure, but the planes on the aircraft carrier make the TerraServer photo look older. Also, on the Yahoo Maps aerial, there is no ghost pier, although I think you can almost make out its edge. Strange.
