The Cutty Sark

Monday, 21st May 2007 by James

The Cutty Sark was the last of the extreme clippers, built in 1869 to transport tea from China.

Probably the most famous ship in the world, the Cutty Sark was this morning severely damaged by a large fire, which police are treating as “suspicious”.

Luckily the masts, which can still be seen in the aerial photograph, had already been taken off the ship to be restored elsewhere so were not damaged in the blaze.

BBC News has the latest on the boat.

What’s that funny dome thing to the North?

I fail to see how that dome could be funny. It costs like 400,000,000,000 pounds or something. Utterly unfunny.

I’ve been using their stuff a lot on my blog - top level content, and you can “mash” or embed the video on your site free of hassle and free of charge.

If you mean the little dome just next to the ship, it’s actually one of the entrances to the Greenwich Foot Tunnel. You can see the northern end here:

Each one contains a manned lift down the the tunnel. Out of hours, you have to use the stairs. Route 1 of the national cycle network runs through the tunnel, yet cycling isn’t allowed! Anyway, the tunnel is well worth a visit if you are in Greenwich.

I loved going through that tunnel when I was a lad!

We previously posted the Millennium Dome (nearly two years ago!) - all of which reminds me of another post I’ve been meaning to finish… :D

“Probably the most famous ship in the world” …? I’ve never heard of it before.

Thats because you are uncultured. Don’t push your lack of knowledge onto us.

Off subject but same area - what game do they play on this court on Blackheath?

“Probably the most famous ship in the world” - I think this is only true for people living in the UK, most of the rest of the world has never heard of it. A better contender for this title would be the Titanic, unless there is some semantic reason making this not a “ship”.

    12. James says:

The Cutty Sark is the most famous ship in the world, mostly because they say it is.

If that doesn’t convince you then Ask Google.

  13. 13. Graeme says:

Hum, “Probably the most famous ship in the world”… Maybe in the UK ?
You know that every country has his own “most famous ship in the world” : Titanic, France (the ship) etc…

  14. 14. Andy says:

The Titanic was British, she was just heading to America when she sank… so I guess the Brits get to have two famous ships?

I guess nobody on this site is of drinking age then?

I’m not sure which I knew of first, but I knew of both well before I could drink.
