It was used during both Gulf wars to store munitions and to supply US bombers leaving from RAF Fairford. Convoys of 6 munitions lorries with a 20 police vehicle escort used to leave the base first thing in the morning, and travel east long the M4 before turning round and travellnig back to Jnc 15 and travel to Fairford. There is a famous/ infamous incident during which some campaigners parked a vehicle across the main access route on the convoy's journey. The protesters then secured themselves to the underside of the vehicle causing the convoyt o turn round and head right back from whence they came!!
