Earth Day

Wednesday, 23rd April 2008 by Alex

Today is Earth Day, a global observance started by US Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970 as a nationwide protest intended to thrust the environment onto the political agenda. Considered the birth of the modern environmental movement, the continuing mission of Earth day is to raise awareness of and appreciation for the Earth’s environment.

Hundreds of millions of people in around 175 countries will be taking part in events which have been organised at every corner of the globe, and you lot don’t get out of doing your part either! Show your support for Earth day and leave a comment with a link to a globe of the earth, somewhere on Google Earth - like this great big one in Berlin.

Check out the The Earth Day Network website for more information, and thanks to Tom Hooten for our starter globe.

Do your part, help fix the Earth, like these guys are doing!

  2. 2. Timhogs says:

If you scan a bit to the right of Rob’s link, you can see what looks like some kind of walkathon coming down the road.

  3. 3. Tim says:

Actually it looks like they are walking from a parking lot to the entrance to some sort of attraction or zoo.

I found a Placemark: Globe / Google Earth. Somewhere in America…

@ Timhogs - I believe that is a school or summer camp field trip to the Zoo and botantical gardens! It appears that the kids are in the center and the parents seem to be on the outskirts around the group of kids.

Legoland, Windsor. The globe is very blurry, the round thing in the centre.

@nova72 - the place is called Globe.

  11. 11. nova72 says:

@ Izzy - haha yeh I was reading through your post of Earth, USA and figured it out, twas blonde/ senior moment I guess.

There’s a globe (a real one) at North Cape, the northernmost point of Europe (if you ignore the small peninsula about a km to the west of it): Placemark: Google Maps / Google Earth

Unfortunately it’s a bit too small to be seen in GE but on Earth Day that may be regarded as symbolic.

  13. 13. koen says:

There’s a globe at the mitad del mundo monument in Ecuador. It’s supposed to mark the equator, but the measurements were of by 200 metres or so.

@Tammo - that’s really weird - and I for one have never seen it before!

The Unisphere looks particularly cool since we posted it, 3 years ago!

@Everyone else - Thank you everyone for your globes, they were all great, well done! :D

  22. 22. koen says:

Thanks tammo. Have to drink some more of that fine Ecuadorian coffee to get the art of replying on GSS just right! ;)

Keith’s globe is pretty cool by the way, though it looks like a nasty part of town.

  23. 23. nova72 says:

@ koen - I used to live near Savannah and have seen tammo’s globe in person. Although the buildings right around it are not as nice, the area is not that nasty. Along White Bluff Rd there are many nice hotels and stores and along Abercorn St there are several well kept shopping centers and futher down is Ogelthorpe Mall, Savannahs primary mall. Across White Bluff Rd from the globe is Hunter Army Airfield.
