Streetview USA gets massive update

Yesterday, Google announced that they had added some extra cities to Street View, including Memphis, Tennessee; Birmingham, Alabama; and Charleston, South Carolina.

What’s even more interesting though, is that this update includes a lot of the places in-between places – highways coast-to-coast are now on Street View, and the coverage in the US has actually been doubled.

This means that some of Google Sightseeing’s previously posted sights, like The Devil’s Tower are now visible in Street View for the first time.

While the update includes places in Maine, West Virginia, North Dakota and South Dakota, a full list of the updates hasn’t yet been compiled as far as I can tell.1

With all this new coverage, perhaps you’ll be the person to stumble across the next street fight, house on fire, or epic bike-related fail – so get submitting your street view discoveries now!

  1. Possibly just because it would be too hard! The amount of extra coverage here is pretty astounding

    how does it work

  2. joseph, if you mean how do you see our street view links – just click on the thumbnail image and it will load up the streetview for that location.

If you mean how does the technology work, well that’s a more difficult question to answer!

It’s funny because I just watched “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” just the other day and then this post of the Devil’s Tower…

Great view of a great place. Nearest large town is Gillette, Wyo, my wife’s hometown. Back when they were filming Close Encounters on location, they were casting for extras in town. My father-in-law tried to get in, but was rejected on account of his height – 6′5″. I guess Spielberg wanted a more homogenous crowd – “the nail that sticks out will be pounded down.” Then there’s the cows that appeared dead on the side of the road…supposedly belonged to a local rancher…were they killed or just tranquilized? Ask the SPCA…

I just saw Close Encounters the other day, too. I had to jump online and go find Devil’s Tower.
