I did take a look at this place. You can see the ferry pretty well, but the others are almost impossible to sight from shore. The pics linked to in the post by the kayakers were possible only because... well, they kayaked. :)

Why can't they get the good ships and make some useful as a homeless shelter or use them as barriers?

Kind of like when the Long Beach had a Gallery, made entirely out of recycled shipping containers.

mm... nutrients.

I'd never heard of this place - if I get a chance, I'd like to head to Mallows this coming weekend. Wonder if you can see anything from land..

@dr.R. - I'm working on it! I hope to have a post ready soon!

@Capital Chay - these are all wooden boats ... I would imagine that being immersed in water for decades makes the wood pretty spongy and full of nutrients. When seeds land on such an environment they could grow quite well.

Nowhere near as impressive but Hartlepool has its very own ship graveyard.
http://maps.google.co.uk/?ie=UTF8&ll=54.633561,-1.190987&spn=0.006955,0.019312&t=h&z=16
and where as once Britain used to make the world's ships now we just excel in taken the ones nobody wants to touch and dismantling them.

Don't keep us waiting... What is the largest ship graveyard in the Eastern Hemisphere? I know there are still some ship wrecks to be seen in Northern Russia: http://googlesightseeing.com/maps?p=&c=&t=h&hl=en&ll=69.223254,33.346295&z=16
But not as many as here, it seems. Would that not make Mallows Bay the largest in the world?

One more thing I found while researching this was this 1925 image of the largest 'controlled' burn - 31 boats.
