Another subterranean cathedral is that of the Spanish Fascists, in the Valley of the Fallen to the north of El Escorial. Built by slave labour – or at least, the forced labour of Republican prisoners – it is probably the only surviving functionally fascist memorial in the world, and is straight out of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis.
The Spanish authorities are in a quandry between the real devotion of a sizeable part of their population to the cause it commemorates, and human probity: the result is an odd dichotomy between the two, somewhat reminiscent of the stresses in Placemark: View Larger Map / Google Earth – which, come to think of it, in some ways may be considered yet another.

That place is stunning inside, especially when there’s music. I’ve seen a Japanese wedding happen in this church when I was visiting it a few years ago.
