I just watched a story on this on "LIfe after People" on discovery channel. They say that in just 45 years this island is reverting to it's natural habitat very quickly. It is a great example of what happens when people aren't around.

I am really curious though, as a west coast guy. Isn't land in NJ really expensive? Seems like someone would want to buy this place and turn it into a private island of fun or something..

 today thwy are miracles .
not to mention the miracle pounder of 1917

Typhoid Mary was isolated on the island because she refused to stop being a cook. She was actually a healthy carrier of Typhoid. Mallon was first quarantined in 1906 and then released in 1910 but she went back to her old job as cook and started infecting people again. She was sent back to the island in 1915 and died there in 1938.

It was the scene of one of the worst shipwrecks in American history, the burning of the excursion steamer General Slocum in 1904, with over 1,000 deaths.
