Well it’s my own fault really. Since I posted that I hadn’t seen any planes in flight, we have been absolutely inundated with submissions proving that I was completely wrong. Glad to hear it, ‘cos some of these are really cool.

Couple of extra plane related ones, first from punk floyd, who says that this is a SR-71 Blackbird Reconnaissance plane parked on Beale AFB, and also from Allen Ormond, who fittingly points us towards the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. This is where the Wright Brothers made the first powered airplane flight.

Remember the scene at the end of Men in Black where the flying saucer crashes through a huge globe? Well this is it, the Unisphere, in Flushing Meadows Park, NY. Not very interesting at first glance, but check out how cool the shadow is!

The Unisphere was the symbol of the 1964/1965 New York World’s Fair. This 12 story high stainless steel model of the earth was designed and fabricated by the United States Steel Corporation and remains on the site at Flushing Meadow Park today.

And Wikipedia says:

It’s the world’s largest global structure, rising 140 feet and weighing 900,000 pounds

The CN Tower and Rogers Centre (formerly the Skydome, home of the Blue Jays) are in downtown Toronto, Canada. Look for the tower’s shadow to see its shape.

A very popular submission has been the The Gateway Arch or rather it’s massive shadow, ‘raydancer’ notes that is it the tallest national monument is the United States at 630 feet and is just as wide. If you look West a bit you’ll find the first of our new category, Stadiums (we’ve got loads to post!). It’s apparently the Busch Stadium (St. Louis Cardinals), although one submitter noted that it is due to be demolished.

“caknuck” also points out the comparison of the highly-developed downtown with the heavily-industrialized & much-poorer East St. Louis, Illinois directly across the river. Finally, “Moxie Dan” points out the Anheuser Busch brewery (the largest beer brewery in the world) is just to the south.
