Take the exit for Sky Harbour Airport from the Hohokam Expressway and you’ll find this nice bit of road art. This road is not far from the double missed bridge and there’s similar misalignment problems throughout the airport.

Barringer Meteor Crater

This is the Barringer Meteor Crater, outside Flagstaff, Arizona. It’s the result of a 300,000 ton meteor coliding with the Earth around 50,000 years ago. The crater is about 1.5 kilometers in diameter and 170 metres deep. It was the first feature on Earth to be recognized as an impact crater, and remains one of the best preserved examples. Also, the end of the movie ‘Starman‘, was filmed here.

Unfortunately, it just missed being captured in high resolution, but you can really get a sense of how big it is, as you can still see it at zoom level 9! The site appears to have two websites devoted to it and I can’t work out which one to link to, so you can take your pick ;-)

P.S. Our apologies for the slow speed of the site at the moment, we got slashdotted!

Please note that some or all of the objects mentioned in this post are no longer visible on Google Earth or Google Maps.

Outside of Sun City West, Arizona are the Caterpillar Proving Grounds, where there is some extremely large type!

I wonder if the bulldozers prove themselves by digging out these letters over and over again?

Picacho Auxiliary Army Airfield #1

Posted by James Turnbull, Friday, 3rd June 2005

Picacho Auxiliary Army Airfield #1 is today used by helicopters of the AZ National Guard, based at the nearby Silverbell Army Heliport, and consists of six short paved runways (they don’t need to be very long as helicopters, not planes, land there). You can see a chopper parked at the top of the light brown strip.

The Airfield was built during WW2 as a satellite of the nearby Marana Army Airfield (now Pinal Airpark) and if you zoom out a little bit you can make out the original landing mat at a 45 degree angle to the new heliport. The former runways are clearest to the east of the heliport and run north-south and east-west.

More information about the airfield is available here.
