Target Stores

One of the most recognized corporate symbols in the United States is that of the Target corporation, who have 1,351 stores in 47 of the 50 states.

Of those 1,351 stores we’ve found three which have a giant Target painted on the roof, all of which are unsurprisingly located near major international airports (not air force bases, because that would be silly ;-) ).

The first target store is in Rosemont (with the Allstate Arena just to the south) and lies in the flight paths to O’Hare International Airport.

Target 1

Our second target is in Queens, New York City and is just east of La Guardia Airport.

Target 3

Another store in Everett, a suburb of Boston, just west of Logan International Airport.

Target 2

And lastly we zip across to Australia for this target, which I assumed was advertising for the benefit of those landing at Brisbane Airport but I was wrong, as noted in the comments by Neil…

The Target store is used as a reporting point for the Archerfiled aerodrome, which is to the West. The Target represents the entry point for aircraft entering the Archerfiled control zone from the East, and has nothing to do with the Brisbane Airport, which is to the North.

Although very similar looking the Target chain of Australia is actually a completely separate company to the U.S. version.

The Gas Tank

Check out this giant liquefied natural gas tank that sits just to the side of the Southeast Expressway in Dorchester, Massachusetts. Ironcladlou (who is now on his fourth posted submission!) says:

The gas tank (as it’s known ’round these parts) used to have a twin, which sat where the blank circle is just to the left of it. Originally, the now-demolished tank was the one with the rainbow painting, and when they destroyed it, they then painted the previously unadorned one. Another interesting tidbit, the gas tank is the largest piece of copyrighted artwork in the world.

Home to the New England Patriots, Gillette Stadium was still under construction when this photo was taken. You can also see the old Foxboro Stadium (which Gillette stadium has replaced) to the west.

Rowing On The Charles River

Apparently one of the most popular (and picturesque) sports in Boston/Cambridge is rowing on the Charles River. This view near Harvard University captures several 8-person racing shells in mid-stroke. Very cool.

Cashman Andrus says:

You can clearly see the paddles of these boats (8 rowers plus a coxswain). That’s the Harvard boathouse in the lower right corner (The one with the red roof).

Further down-river you can see one of Boston’s “Red Line” subway trains crossing the Longfellow Bridge (aka “the salt and pepper bridge” because of the shape of the towers). The train shown in this shot is travelling from Cambridge to Boston. David says that:

A train crossing this bridge is used in virtually every ‘establishing shot’ for movies and tv shows that take place in Boston.

And that’s good enough for me to put this post in the Movie Locations category ;-)

There are a lot of stadiums we’re yet to post! Here’s Fenway Park, where the Boston Red Sox play.
