The Sunsphere

This is the Sunsphere in the 1982 World’s Fair Park, Knoxville, Tennessee. It’s a 266 foot high structure, topped with a 74 foot sphere made of bronze-coated reflective glass.

The Sunsphere was featured in the Simpson’s once (Nelson accidentally toppled it), and there’s even a “religion” based around the tower, known as the ‘Church of The Giant Golden Microphone‘.

The Hernando Desoto Bridge

Another super-cool bridge shadow here, belonging to the Hernando Desoto Bridge. Built in 1972 it carries the I-40 across the Mississippi River in Memphis (it’s actually right next to the previously posted Memphis Pyramid). Memphis has a total of four bridges that cross the Mississippi. Top to bottom in our second image they are The Harahan, The Frisco and The Memphis-Arkansas. Steve Cox has a cool ground-level tour of these bridges on his site.

Props to Justin for this one :-)

Reader “Jason Parrish” points out that The Memphis Grizzlies no longer play at the Memphis Pyramid Arena but have now moved to the FedEx Forum which was clearly still being constructed when this photo was taken. You can see that only a quarter or so of the seats have been put in and there are four large white cranes on site (check the shadows!)

Jason also added:

One block North is the famed Beale Street; three blocks north-east you see the Memphis Peaboy Hotel; and finally five blocks north, you’ll see Autozone Park; home of the Memphis Redbirds, AAA farm team of St. Louis Cardinals.

The 32 story Memphis Pyramid Arena is the third largest pyramid in the world. The NBA Memphis Grizzlies play here and it seats 21,000 people.
