Built in 1965 and once home to the Houston Astros and the Houston Oilers, the Reliant Astrodome is now part of Reliant Park and sits next to the new Reliant Stadium (to the left, still under construction in this photo), the Reliant Arena (that triangular thing below the Astrodome), and the Reliant Center (North of the Astrodome). The Astrodome is also famous for Astroturf, the artificial grass first used in the stadium and now found almost everywhere.

A monument to the battle that won Texas’ independence, the San Jacinto Monument is the world’s tallest memorial column. At 570 feet, it’s 15 feet higher than the Washington Memorial. Also at the site is the permanently berthed Battleship Texas.

Six Flags Over Texas is part of the ‘Six Flags’ chain of Theme Parks (we’ve many others to post) and they apparently filmed the movie Spy Kids 2 here (albeit replacing some of the rides with ‘more crazy’ CG versions). A little to the north is the Six Flags Hurricane Harbor water park.

To the south west you’ll also find The Ameriquest field, home of the Texas Rangers.

Forest Fires

It’s pretty obvious where the fire has been and where it is heading in the first forest fire in Louisiana (thumbnail #1) and there is an immense amount of smoke from this other fire in Louisiana. You can see a fire spreading like it’s a burning piece of paper in this fire in Texas (thumbnail #2).

There are also (low-res) shots of a huge fire in Central Cuba, a collection of fires in Alaska and yet more in Alaska.
