Boeing Factory

The Boeing factory building is the biggest building (by volume) in the world. The original building was constructed in 1966 and completed in 1969. Its footprint now covers 98.3 acres and is where Boeing constructs their 747, 767, and 777 planes.

I was going to submit this one too… but I figured it had already been taken care of. There are lots of awesome things to sightsee around Seattle.. hopefully we start seeing more!
When you drive past the Boeing plant on I-5 it just seems to keep going and going and going………..
I have seen bigger… just kidding

The previous largest building by volume: the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) at KSC.
I’ve went there on business (I was one of the engineers doing the cabin and call lights for the 747-400 and the new 767) and got to get a tour from some engineers. As said before, the place was absolutely huge. Think of a parking structure, but with widebody planes instead of cars in the spots.
The most memorable thing was a humorous incident (see http://www.netfunny.com/rhf/jokes/99/Nov/weight.html) that a few years later got written up in Readers’ Digest.

I had the chance to tour the Boeing Plant when I was in Seattle this summer. The place is horrendously large, and just about every square inch of it is covered in gear and parts. They use giant cranes gliding on rails on the ceiling to carry stuff around (the cranes have a total network of almost 5 miles of rails). Also, there are two sub-levels of tunnels below the production floor, so that golf carts can get around. The tunnels are also a favorite place for Boeing employees to go jogging and biking in the morning.
A 747 takes between 8 and 12 months to build here. They’re also now developing the new 787’s here, too!
