Rance Tidal Power Plant

The world’s first and largest tidal power generation facility is located on the Rance River in north-western France. The estuary of the Rance River sees tides averaging 8 metres between low and high tide, and up to 13.5 metres in extreme conditions. This makes it an ideal location for tidal power – a concept first explored in the 1920s, but not studied in detail  until 1943.
