The Titan Missile Musem

The Titan Missile Museum in AZ is the only publicly accessible Titan II missile site in the USA. Zoom in and note the tiny black half-circle... that's the half-open silo. It's kept that way so the "soviets" can peer inside with their satellites and see that it's not an active missile site any more.
Great place to visit if you’re interested in aerospace. It’s really cool, and a great tour. They filmed Star Trek: First Contact there, too. There’s your quota of useless trivia for today.
The soviets? What decade is your subconscious stuck in?
Craig: He just wrote it as I had sent it to him. I wrote “soviets” because when the silo was converted into a museum they were the reason it was kept open. I’m not sure if they’re still obligated to keep it open… but they do. 🙂
Ya, what’s your deal with “soviets”?! 😉
Yes, “soviets” is the the reason the the silo is half open, as the silo door is half open, and there are two huge concrete blocks that keep it from opening all the way. I toured the facility about 8 years ago, pretty neat if you are a history buff, wife was not impressed.
WHOA SOVIET RUSSIA IS NO MORE DUDES!
WHERE IS TEH LOVE>?
Blast it is already posted. too bad its such a far off shot. much much cooler in person. THey even do a fake launch!
This is not the only publicly accessible Titan II site in the US… Its just the only one of the two giving regular tours. Truth be told there’s an old bunker/launch site in Madera Canyon. Its up in the mountains. There’s a hatch there, you go in, the door closes behind you, then you move on through the next hatch. Both can’t be open at once. Down there is just a bunch of old garbage that you’d find in a Sci-Fi movie from the 60’s. Really neat place. Totally worth looking into. Ask a local.
this is a great thing to vistit!
we have one of the transmiters they have http://www.smecc.org
