Combine Harvesters

It's harvest time in the fields near Salinas and most farmers seem to have at least one combine working the land. In one of the fields you can see five combine harvesters - now that's just selfish 😀

As far as I know, few if any farmers own combines. Outside companies provide the services for a fee.

In Texas (and I’m sure in other places too) they irrigate farm land using huge sprinkler systems on wheels. They hook up stationary at one end in the center of a circle and it moves around like the hands of a clock.

In this example, you can make out the sprinker system at about 5’oclock, just slightly below the road.

Well, not quite. It’s a small reservoir, probably dug out of a small pond. The irrigation systems that Chris mentioned use these reservoirs.

Unfortunately the lighting angle makes the lakes look like they stick upwards, so the square one looks like a bizarrely-patterned building. Try turning your moniter upside down… 🙂
About those big sprinklers – my brother was learning to fly in a small Piper Cub. He and my uncle flew on a cross country to Kansas, and the sprinklers were all spraying water. They got a little closer, and a little closer, and a littler closer, until finally my uncle flew straight into the spray of one, soaking my brother, much to his surprise! Haha!

Hey Luke, it’s called capitalism, and there is nothing wrong with it. Have you thought of all the worries the guys that farm 1000’s of acres have? The massive outlay for equipment, seed, fertilizer,ect. Not knowing if they’ll have enough of a crop to pay it back? Just because they farm alot, don’t make it easy. And Peter, lots of farmers have combines. Most guys with 200 or more acres have combines. Me thinks you two have never been on or near a farm; probably not from the Midwest either.
In regard to the lots of combines, what happened for my uncle (farmer) was, he got hurt, so he could not harvest. Everyone in the area pitched in by bringing their combine over and doing the whole field on a few hours, then they moved on to someone else that needed help. So it may not be just rich farmer with lotsa combines. 😉
