U.S. Open
Thursday, 16th June 2005 by Alex Turnbull
This is Pinehurst, North Carolina, where the 2005 U.S. Open kicked off today. Unfortunately it's not all in high-resolution, but in the thumbnail I think we're looking at the 18th. Just to the west is the clubhouse.
Wow, look at all those golf courses!
NASA World Wind has that area completly covered:

Damn!!! How many golf courses are there there?
The Pinehurst resort has eight 18-hole course altogether. The Open is being played on Pinehurst No. 2, by far the most famous at the complex,
Just a little bit south, I think there is a new golf course under construction

Looks like this sandy area is little ways south of the 18th hole. The clubhouse is actually to the north-west. Here is the link to the center of the 18th green. I confirmed it by looking at a fly-over video on the US Open’s web site. you’ll notice the clubhouse is directly to the west of the 18th green. Link to the 18th: View Placemark

I live right near there. Unfortunately I’m in the green fuzzy area just north of the map of #2 that James Adams posted. As for the number of golf courses around here, there are 8 pinehurst courses and dozens of other private and pbulic courses all within about 15-30 minutes drive. If you golf it’s a great place to be.
