USA fields
Friday, 19th August 2005 by James Turnbull
If I was going to go to all the effort of writing something in a field I'd make sure it was something more interesting than the name of my country; everyone who's here knows they're here so what's the point? Given the space I'd probably write "googlesightseeing.com" 😉
Anyway, over in Rochester, NY is the letters "USA" mowed into a field.
And in Rosemount, MN a "USA" with flag is mowed with very straight lines.
Thanks: John & Amy.
Turn on Hybrid mode on the second one… It’s got streets running through it.
Perhaps a suburb was constructed since the image was taken…?
Stongey–
Yup. You are right…that field is no longer there. It is all suburban houses now.
If you use Google Earth, go to Cambridge, MA as it is the highest resolution that is available. 6 inch resolution- amazing. One place you can see a man about to serve in a game of tennis!
Rob: A link to the location in GMaps would have helped. It’s Russell E. Hoyt Field, and, wow, you’re right about the resolution.
The sat. foto you are talkin about is taken by a company called Sanborn (it says at the bottom of the foto on G Earth). I have never seen n e other fotos by them on G Earth.
John and Amy. If you are Americans, then shame on you. What’s the point? The POINT is a feeling of pride and love for one’s country. If you can’t understand this simple ideal, and you are indeed American citizens, well then I can’t help you.
Pride is mowing your country’s name into a field? That makes as much sense as, I dunno, wearing pork chop underwear because you like Paraguay.
Bill – the comments about what’s the point are mine; John & Amy just supplied the links.
Anyway, I’m from the UK so no shame for me! (I have to agree with Paul though)
Rob B —
Sanborn does aerial photography so the image was not a sat photo. It was likely taken from a helicopter or airplane with Vexcel’s UltraCamD.
The image is not up anymore, but I hope the test was an indication of google maps future.
Actually the reason rob didn’t post a Gmaps link is because the high-resolution imagery in cambridge is only found on Google Earth. The image IS still there and I too hope there will be more SUPER high-resolution imagery to come.
You can see the same kind of high res pictures if you look at the Google Campus in Google Earth (its one of the default bookmarks).
There are many hi-res maps updates in GEarth that did not show in gmaps…try NYC or area 51 for example.
Does GEarth exist for OS X yet?
NOPE it does not exist on OSX yet, and when I’m talking about SUPER high-res then I mean the 6inches per pixel. That means anything in Cambridge MA bigger then 6 inches can be seen.
now thats an ego Ben
Ben: I understand that the high-res image is only with GEarth, but I spent 45 minutes scrolling around all of the tennis courts in Cambridge to find the one he was talking about.
but someone had put a pinmark on the tennis court saying “man serving a ball in tennis”
One more USA field

What a surprise you agree with Paul D. However, my apologies to John and Amy.
You do not understand the USA. Americans are America’s biggest fans!
