Berlin Victory Column
Saturday, 10th September 2005 by James Turnbull
The Berlin Victory Column (Siegessäule) was constructed to celebrate the military successes of Prussia over Denmark. In 1938 Hitler moved it from its place in front of the Reichstag to the centre of Tiergarten where it stands today.
The Reichstag is here: View Placemark and if you scroll just off the bottom, you can see the Brandenburg Gate.
You can see an “angel” standing on this monument in the Wim Wenders movie “Fareway So Close“. the movie poster : http://www.cinemagebooks.com/shop_image/product/000589.jpg
This is the tower that Bono was on top of when he sang in the video for “Stay (Faraway, So Close)” from Zooropa. I always wanted to visit this 🙂
what is that oval shaped thing just to the north?
I’m not sure what that oval thing is, but while trying to find it I found the “pregnant oyster” to the north east.

Why does my previous comment with a couple of links in it say “Your comment is awaiting moderation. “? I’ve seen this happen before when posting 2 many posts in a row, but that was my only one in this thread, and my only one today for that matter.
The “oval shaped thing” should be the ‘Bundespräsidialamt’, the office of Germany’s Federal President (thats the best translation I could come up with g).
Is this balloon(?) tethered to the ground?? View Placemark
The Balloon is hanging on a rope – so it is fixed to the ground. You can get in there and it will go up some meters (you’ve got a good few then). It is sponsored by the german TV-Company “Sat.1” (www.sat1.de) and coloured like their logo.
