Blackpool Tower
Wednesday, 1st February 2006 by James Turnbull
Another member of the World Federation of Great Towers is Blackpool Tower on the famous seaside Promenade. Obviously inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Blackpool's version also features Britain's highest post box and the 'Walk of Faith' glass floor, a two inch thick clear panel that looks straight down to the ground 158m below.
Just to the south is Coral Island, a pirate-themed amusement arcade with some Large Type on the roof to advertise to those visiting the Tower.
Thanks: Craig & Tom
…but where have central & north piers dissapered to? Only south pier is visible. How weird.
WTF? Where have they gone? I was there on Sunday and they were certainly there then! They look like they have been crudely airbrushed out but only the pier part and not the landside structure. Sod mysterious flying globes and electronic circuits at the bottom of lakes this is the real mystery. We demand to be told where our piers are!
I had never heard of the Blackpool Tower until I read this post.
Now, by a very surprising coincedence, I also found an image taken at this very tower on my favorite photoblog, Chromasia. It’s a shot of the “walk of faith” and really conveys the experience of being up there. Here’s a link…

I just thought it was weird that two blogs I read would focus on the same obscure tower in the same day. The stars must all be in alignment, or something.
Blackpool Tower obscure? I don’t think so..
blush
Pardon me. I guess I’m just uncultured. I had never heard of it, anyway, living over here in the USA. And I just assumed that if it took this long to make it onto Google Sightseeing, since all the really popular stuff was quickly spotted months ago, that it must be relatively obscure. Nothing personal.
Blackpool Tower averages 1.2 million visitors a year! Isn’t that a larger amount than US citizens who hold a passport? You said it Parker – uncultured! Seriously though Blackpool is an uniquely British experience and if American tourists can drag themselves away from London for a day they could do no better than visit Blackpool. If you have any culture at all they remove it from you at the city limits! It is like Altantic City and Las Vegas crossed with The Bronx and Compton only with less sophistication and more crime. Saying all that i absolutely love the place (as do 6 million other people who visit every year!)
Well, I’m shamed.
Actually, it looks like a pretty cool place! If I ever make it over to that side of the pond, it’s definitely one destination I’ll have to check out! More interesting to me than Buckingham Palace, anyway. 😉
And that’s why I love Google Sightseeing.
heres a cool webcam on the top of the tower, i think. Don’t rip into me if i’m wrong please northern git! im from new zealand. http://www.bbc.co.uk/lancashire/webcam/index.shtml
Louis,
Yup, that’s the same Blackpool. It looks very driech this morning though!
North Pier?? Where is it??
It’s got the stub of it, two junctions down
Central and Northern pier both erased!
