Site News April ’06
Saturday, 1st April 2006 by James Turnbull
There's changes afoot as the staff at GgSs celebrate our first anniversary next week! We've got loads planned but they'll have to wait a little while more as Alex is still awaiting a decent internet connection in his new flat and I'm off to Chicago for a week's holiday 😀
And while I'm posting news I recommend a Google Earth visit to Las Vegas as it has recently been updated to very high resolution imagery (3"/pixel!). Sadly the new images are not yet available on Google Maps.
Have a nice week everybody!
I was waiting for some funnier news, given it’s April 1st… but news are news, anyway, so thanks for the good work and keep it up! 🙂
At least you can just look at this place with Google Earth … :

I’ve got one for you… the Stratosphere at Bob Stupaks casino casts a huge shadow… But where is the Stratospehere itself? Seems like a bad picture merge has completely erased the tallest landmark in Las Vegas!
Something wierd is going in Google Earth with the Stratosphere tower in Vegas.
yeah I was gonna say the same thing. Someone fouled up bigtime ’cause that’s an important landmark.
Yep. The Stratosphere has a lovely shadow, but doesn’t appear to actually be physically present on screen.
Odd.
Also (and this is an info problem, not an image problem,) the Luxor “pinpoint” locator thing is way far away from the actual building.
However, the building looks very cool.
Here’s what I think happened with the Stratosphere Tower: The photo with the tower in it was taken at a steep angle, so the tower appeared to be angled far to the right, in the same way that the Sears Tower looks like its leaning down. Then, when the people at Google came along to stich two images together, they cut off the top of the tower which was sticking out to towards east. You can plainly see evidence of a stiching with the color changes right next to the tower base. Now, look at this picture of the Stratosphere:

The buildings inside the tower’s base, inside the three tiers, look just like the buildings (on Google Earth) that appear at the location of the base. So, we are seeing the base of tower on Google Earth, but not the rest of it.
Wow! If they get any more high-res, they’re going to have to start getting permission to publish people’s faces. Look at the top of the “Eiffel Tower” across from the Bellagio fountains- you can make out the people inside the cage.
I’m having trouble wrapping my brain around this one. someone was having fun with the splicing.

here is a western view of the top of the Eiffel Tower in Las Vegas. WOW!!

here’s another shadow whose source was cutoff in splicing. http://www.aretemm.net/googlearth/sourceless_shadow.kmz
here’s the same place in maps. View Placemark
the big gold and blue dome is hard to miss. too bizarre. gotta wonder why it was omitted. plans to fix this one and the missing Stratosphere.
THE STRATOSHPERE WAS ERASED TO PREVENT TERRRORISTS FROM EASILY PLANNING ANY POTENTIAL ATTACK ON THE TOWER ITSELF.
