Typhoon Class Submarines
Thursday, 27th April 2006 by James Turnbull
In 1977 the Soviets began construction of a fleet of nuclear submarines that were to hold the title of "World's Largest Submarine" for nearly 30 years (and counting!) - the Typhoon class.
The fictional "Red October" that was hunted in the movie was a Typhoon class sub but in reality there were only six completed (construction of a seventh was aborted half way through).
Despite their age we can see three Typhoon Submarines in reserve service at Zapadnaya Litsa Naval Base. However, it was reported in 2004 that these last three were to be decommissioned, so they may have since been finally dismantled.
If you scroll further up the river you'll also find Oscar-II & Victor-III class submarines and there's a ton more info on the Typhoons at Global Security.
Thanks: Eddie
Dang, that is some seriously rugged terrain.
Wasn’t Sean Connery on the Red October, instead of hunting it?
Cool stuff anyway, keep up the good work!
Oh yeah, thanks koen.
“Ryan — watch yourshelf. Shum thingsh in here don’t react too well to bulletsh.”
Great movie.
“One ping please Vishily?”
awesome movie!
“Yah, like me. I don’t react well to bullets”
It’s strange, looking at pictures like this; back when I was a kid, the only people who got to see this kind of photograph were in the armed forces, the secret service, or in Craig Thomas novels. And now they’re free on the internet.

More Russian submarines in Polyarny, close to Murmansk. The Red October was supposed to leave from Polyarny, in the novel (I don’t remember if this was mentioned in the movie or not).
And what about this submarine in a dry dock? This whole area North of Murmansk and along the coast of the Barents Sea is still off-limits for foreigners, but allegedly nuclear vessels are rotting away there. Remember the submarine Kursk? This ship is in any case suspiciously on it’s side…
