Pedra Bonita
Tuesday, 2nd May 2006 by James Turnbull
Rio de Janeiro's location within steep mountains makes it perfect for the sports of hang and paragliders. Here on Pedra Bonita ("Beautiful Rock") is one of over 50 launch ramps in Rio where those who are brave enough leap off and glide allllllllll the way down to the beach below.
Im not quite sure what we are seeing here… Is that a paraglider with a purple parachute just jumped? And is that a hand glider waiting to take off?
Tis what it looks like to me…
you know the only real problem with satelite photography is that it is hard to determine where there are cliffs. I know one is there, but you have to search hard to find it and if I was just skimming the area, I wouldn’t have even seen it
Where are they landing? The beach perhaps.
Off Topic: Has anybody else been getting a blank page when they try to view this site for the past couple weeks? (until today) Oh well glad it’s back, I’ve got some catching up to do…
To see how cool these cliffs are:
1.) Create a new text file called “pedrabonita.kml” 2.) Open the text file with notepad or textedit (if you have a Mac) 3.) Paste the following code into it:
Save the file and double-click the file to open with Google Earth.
OK, the above comment won’t work. Try pasting this instead:
<?xml version=”1.0″ encoding=”UTF-8″?> <kml xmlns=”http://earth.google.com/kml/2.0″> <Document> <name>~GE8898.kmz</name> <Placemark> <name>GoogleEarth_Placemark</name> <LookAt> <longitude>-43.27087205949109</longitude> <latitude>-22.99133815215968</latitude> <altitude>0</altitude> <range>1086.346347894036</range> <tilt>67.25279095430194</tilt> <heading>112.5178917624043</heading> </LookAt> <styleUrl>root://styleMaps#default+nicon=0x307+hicon=0x317</styleUrl> <Point> <coordinates>-43.27087205949109,-22.99133815215968,0</coordinates> </Point> </Placemark> </Document> </kml>
Hang Glider crash in Pedra Bonita, two die. “One accident occured during a double flight when Valtinho went to settle in the beach. The wing crash in the big coast and fell in the sea.
The victims had been rescued by the helicopter but they had not resisted the wounds. “
