Area 5
Friday, 27th April 2007 by James Turnbull
"Area 5" is part of the Nevada Test Site where, along with other more famous areas, America has for decades tested various underground nukes, bombs and maybe even alien spacecraft.
A large part of Area 5 is used as storage for radioactive waste and what we see here is deep trenches dug in the sand. These trenches are then filled with large containers of radioactive waste and covered over.
Some of this radioactive material can be pretty nasty and the worst of it is known as "Transuranic Waste" which, according to Wikipedia, means
Waste containing more then 100 nanocuries of alpha-emitting transuranic isotopes per gram of waste with half-lives greater than 20 years.
More information on Area 5 and the Nevada Test Site.

You had to go and say the ‘a’ word didnt you?
You’ll have All American Men in Black Suits on your doorstep within 48 hours now.
There are many different “areas” to the site, some of course more secretive than others. Growing up in Vegas we knew when they were testing because it would feel like a minor earthquake.
Randall – There are more than one testing area in the United States rolleyes
not to act like a smart-ass, cuz i dont know that much about it, but from what i’ve learnt in physics, this thing seem kinda odd to me. Dont sound too dangerous.
“Waste containing more then 100 nanocuries of alpha-emitting transuranic isotopes per gram of waste with half-lives greater than 20 years”
no idea what nanocuries is, dunno what transuranic means. BUT alpha rays (ya, raidioactive material) is He or helium cores, or what its called in english. Those are the least dangerus ray-type, i guess, due to alpha-rays ONLY TRAVEL 10CM OR LESS IN JUST AIR… and more – for what ive learnt, theres multibel nasty stuff with half-lifes GREATER THAN 1000 YEARS. So it seems like its not that nasty stuff afterall. (for you to know, gamma-rays are the most dangerous, containing fotones-or what the heck its called in english-and its cabable of penetrating like meters of concrete or sumthing)
But pleace tell me if im wrong about sumthing (gonna have a test about it next tuesday, would be nice to hear if im all wrong)
Da Jal. If you are taking a test I suggest read the question very carefully.
The Wikipedea definition contains the words “more than” implying that this waste is above a so-called “safe level” of “100 nanocuries of alpha-emitting transuranic isotopes per gram of waste with half-lives greater than 20 years”
Personally I wouldn’t want waste well below this level on my doorstep. “Nasty stuff” indeed.
oh… right…
my bad but still, alpha-rays only travel like like 10cm. But I also just read in my notes, that the waste, from the waste alpha-stuff (complicated). But the leftovers from alpha rays often produce gammarays… sort of wierd, cuz it then goes from fairly dangerous stuff, to pretty dangerous stuff. But dont bother, im pretty sure I gonna pass this test, even if I miss this in my knowledge.
“Transuranic” just means “higher than uranium in the periodic table”, i.e. the atomic number is greater than 92. These elements do not occurr naturally and aer produced artifically in nuclear reactions.
trans-uran-ic
got it
Bah, there are no saucers/UFOs at Area 51 or any of the NTS, just aircraft and weapons. I was going to say no alien craft, but that’s not true! They have MiGs.
Any ET stuff would probably have gone to Wright-Patterson AFB or a place that actually would have been used for aircraft back in the UFOs falling from nowhere and landing everywhere years!
The Department of Energy gives free tours once a month to the test site. I was just out there last week. That particular spot is on the tour. According to the manager of the complex, there is no transuranic waste or anything with a half-life of more than 20 years stored here. I hope he was telling the truth, because some of it is contaminated soil packed into nothing more tight than vinyl bags.
Area 51 has conducted tests on outerspace alien aircraft and our government patrols this area like a pit bull. Anyone that thinks our military is forthright with the public belongs in the same camp of those that thought Iraq had nuclear wheapons ready to strike America. Bush, Cheny annd his team of oil mongers are why we are now paying five dollars per gallon of gas. Wake up an face the facts.
