DUMAC?
Tuesday, 1st May 2007 by James Turnbull
In the comments of this morning's Underwater Explosion post reader Julian found this great large type.
Apparently made of trees planted in the water, the word may well be "DUMAC" or Ducks Unlimited de México.
Despite the title, Ducks Unlimited aren't about promoting a world overrun with an unlimited number of Ducks. They are in fact a pro-hunting organisation, who've been accused of breeding ducks just to shoot them.
Thanks: Julian & EAF
The wetland to the east of those trees are perfect for duck hunting… I’m convinced that’s who planted those trees.
cool ah
Many hunters and hunting organizations maintain the lands that they hunt on. That is DUcks Unlimited’s stance–to preserve these lands where the ducks live. They dont try to hide that, and there’s plenty of articles on hunting in their magazine. Unfortunately this isn’t ideal to those who don’t hunt (or don’t understand that their meat comes from animals, and hunting is much more humane than mass farming), but the alternative seems to be that no one maintain the land, and let developers build on it and others dump waste on it instead.
its easy to get PETA-style on someone without knowing all the facts and reasoning behind it. If this is an animal rights issue, just remember, vegans, organic vegetables are grown in cow crap.
Re: Court
I’m with you Court!
“accused of breeding ducks just to shoot them” – I agree, this sounds no worse than farming to me, and way better than shooting them without breeding them.
Farming is killing an animal for meat, and the animal is killed in a as humane a way possible.
However, these guys don’t eat the ducks, they just shoot them. That’s killing for sport and that’s wrong.
Woohoo! my second find worthy of publishing. Jet powered cars and tree planting duck hunters. I wonder what my next find will be.
Bill F — I know a lot of duck hunters, and all of them eat the meat of the ducks they kill.
I also know a lot of hunters (duck and otherwise) who donate the meat that they will not eat to kitchens that feed the poor and homeless.
Some people may kill only for sport, but not every hunter is like that, and those of us who do hunt for both the sport and the meat do not deserve to be lumped in with that crowd.
I don’t know really with the hunting issue, some say its cruel, some say its sport, I just say, forget all that and go Clay Kitten Shooting
why must people involve politics here? why can’t we all say wow that is really cool or look what i found over here or here is some more information on this cool sight. no one is going to convince another they are wrong on the internet, let alone through comments on a google sightseeing post.
I agree with Randall……let’s just leave politics out of the GSS and concentrate on the WOW sites. Oh, and impeach Cheney first. 🙂
Ducks are yummy.
To the northeast of DUMAC, I spotted a grove of what I would describe as albino trees? Does anyone have an idea of what that could be?
One of the greatest things about Google Earth and maps is the politics. It lets you educate yourself about what goes on in the rest of the world. It not just about looking at pretty pictures or ‘cool’ sites. This is illustrated by the prominence and popularity of ‘political’ layers in Google Earth.
And people do convince other people that they are wrong on the internet. I think I have changed my mind about duck hunting after reading the post that pointed out that a swamp with duck hunters is probably a better thing than a standard duck farm. A duck farm has just ducks packed as close together as possible. The swamp supports many other birds and other life forms too.
I agree Timothy….about the ducks and changing ones mind. Now as long as we are talking about ducks and politics, would you agree that Cheney needs to be impeached first?
Julian are you sure this is Ducks Unlimited???? Turn the image upside down and try to decifer it!!! Seems its possible it spell something else
