Dancing in the Street
Tuesday, 8th April 2008 by Alex Turnbull
Here in New Orleans the party looks to be so good that the guests have all spilled out into the street!
It looks like they're gathered around Joe's House of Blues - and yet the giant red arrow outside clearly indicates they should be inside instead. So on the off chance Joe's sound system isn't all that loud, why else might all these people be hanging around outside?
Thanks to Joey.
more interesting to me…zoom out and notice all of the blue tarped roofs.
Why ask why? Party!
“blue tarped roofs”…….
Must be left over from Katrina.
A little googling and I found the reason for the “Blue Roofs”.

Oh hey, I heard about this party – there was an invitation across the nation. It was during the summer sometime, and there was swingin’ swayin’, and records playin’.
IIRC it didn’t matter what you wear, just as long as you were there.
A fire drill maybe? 🙂
There is a big black car outside and to the left of the crowd look like two large motorcycles in ‘formation’. Is it a funeral perhaps?
I think the funeral idea has some merit. Just north of this area is what appears to be a cemetery. And New Orleans is renown for its “funerals with music”

Re my earlier post, one could also argue that it looks like the procession is being led eastward by a police car, which is what the white car just east of the intersection appears to be.
Are <a href=`’https://www.googlesightseeing.com/maps?p=&c=&t=k&hl=en&ll=29.931891,-90.090759&z=20″ rel=”nofollow”>these three cars police cars? If so, along with the one up front, maybe its some sort of march or protest? More likely though is a very sexy party.
Three police cars to the rear – one up front at the intersection and three more motorcycles further up the street (including the two already mentioned). What about the visit of a politician or some sort of dignitary – perhaps looking at post Katrina reconstruction (or lack of it)?
Nah, a politician wouldn’t attract such huge crowds.
I like the idea of a party better!
A crowd of people, and police cars everywhere… doughnut store reopening?
I’m here all week.
I think that the two “motorcycles in formation” mentioned earlier are in fact horses.
Also, the angle of the houses after the intersection is different making me think there must be a photo join along 7th street. We may only be seeing the tail end of the procession.
For me, that is a street problem or a convoy, nothing more, nothing less.
It’s nice to see something going on at this place. I took the photo of the sign; when I did so, I seriously questioned whether Joe’s was still open for business. Thanks for answering the question for me!
I’m with Timothy, these are definitely two mounted policemen, and the image does appear to change at the intersection, meaning that this is only the tail part of a procession. But what was it for I wonder? A funeral seems likely, given the location and timing – but who got this extravagant a send-off I wonder?
This scene is likely what is known as a wake or repast following a funeral. We had a lot of them just after the levee failure flooded our city. This size of gathering is not at all unusual nor is it unusual for the party to be in the streets. Police often accompany the funeral procession and help direct traffic around the event. By the way, most of the blue roofs are gone now. I love looking at these satellite images taken just after katrina. They make me realize how much has been done.
