The media here seems to be making it out to be a bad thing, a violation against New Zealand, like everyone’s privacy is at risk and you can “spy on the neighbours”. Such negativity over ignorance.
Did the same sort of thing happen when this was launched in USA?
Bugger the privacy loving pc tree lovers, this is cool.
My kiwi girlfriend is hyperventilating she’s so excited. I think I know what we’ll be doing all freaking day long. Their satellite imagery still stinks though for much of the country.
Coverage is sparse for Ngaruawahia, seems like they only cared to do the main roads, hopefully it will be expanded later.
What about this view of Mount Ngauruhoe, better known as Mount Doom in the Lord of the Rings movies?

There is also a spectacular view from above: https://www.googlesightseeing.com/maps?p=&c=&t=k&hl=en&ll=-39.156654,175.634522&z=15
I was so excited when I noticed this during my routine use of Google maps! Like Simon said, the satellite quality and coverage is pretty bad for the majority of NZ and some parts are definitely over two years out of date. A lot of the street imaging in Christchurch (my city) seems to have been taken very early in the morning due to a general lack of traffic and people around for a lot of it. I wish Google had informed me when they were going past my house so I could have tidied the hedges a little š
@Daniel: I also don’t understand the ignorance and negativity. The media seem to think the images are live and magically update themselves. How can this be spying on neighbours if it is a static image? The media need to be less ignorant of technology….oh wait a minute, that doesn’t sell stories.
Unfortunately street view hasn’t reached UK yet but the press are already moaning about it š
