On this day: Mumtaz Mahal Died
Tuesday, 17th June 2014 by Ian Brown
On June 17, 1631, Mumtaz Mahal, the wife of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, died while giving birth. The magnificent white marble mausoleum he had built for her is arguably the world's most famous building - the Taj Mahal. The city of Agra is still known for its stonework today, as some descendants of the thousands of artisans who worked on the building continue the traditional practice of working with inlays of semi-precious stones.
