On this day: The Battle of Berne
Friday, 27th June 2014 by Ian Brown
On June 27, 1954, a World Cup Quarter Final game between Hungary and Brazil turned ugly with increasingly aggressive play leading to several fights during the game. The last minutes are described as a "running battle" and violence involving players, team officials and journalists continued in the dressing rooms after the game. This became known as the Battle of Berne, after the Swiss City where it took place - at the Wankdorf Stadium (modern reconstruction shown here.)
Given the news from Brazil this week, I have to wonder whether any biting was involved in the Battle of Berne?
