On this day: First Football League Games
Monday, 8th September 2014 by Ian Brown
Saturday afternoons were never the same after September 8, 1888, when the first games were played amongst the twelve teams in England's new Football League. Among the teams, all from the midlands and north-west, Preston North End beat Burnley 5-2, and went on to win the first league title, not losing a single game. Although Preston's stadium has been rebuilt, it is still in the same Deepdale location as that first League game 126 years ago.
